Short-Term Coverage

Temporary Security in Rhode Island for Gaps, Outages, and Unplanned Events

Short-term officer coverage after a break-in, during an alarm outage, between tenants, or through a storm cleanup. Requests are scoped quickly and answered honestly about what can be staffed and when.

When a Property Needs Coverage It Did Not Plan For

Temporary security fills a defined gap for a defined period, and the most useful thing we can do at the start is tell you accurately what is possible.

The call usually comes after something has changed. A storefront window was broken overnight and the board-up crew cannot come until tomorrow. The alarm panel or camera system is down and the vendor is waiting on parts. A regular officer is out and the post cannot sit empty. A tenant moved out and the building will be vacant for six weeks. A contractor has two weeks of high-value material on site before it is installed. None of these justify a long-term contract, and all of them leave a property exposed in the meantime.

We handle these as short-term assignments with a start, an expected end, and written instructions, however brief. We do not guarantee response times, and we will not tell you an officer is on the way until one is confirmed. All short-notice coverage is subject to officer availability, location, licensing, transportation where relevant, and assignment requirements. If we cannot staff a request, or can only staff part of it, you will hear that plainly so you can make other arrangements.

What Officers Do on This Assignment

After a Break-In or Damage

  • Maintaining a presence at a breached door, window, or fence line until it is repaired
  • Limiting entry to the owner, police, insurers, and repair crews the client names
  • Logging everyone who enters and leaves the affected area
  • Documenting the visible condition of the property at the start and end of each shift
  • Calling police if anyone attempts to enter without authorization

System Outages and Staffing Gaps

  • Walking rounds in place of an alarm or camera system that is out of service
  • Covering a front desk, gate, or lobby post while a regular position is vacant
  • Checking doors, docks, and perimeter on a schedule set for the outage period
  • Reporting to the facility contact at agreed intervals

Vacant Buildings and Short Project Phases

  • Interior and exterior checks of buildings between tenants
  • Watching stored materials and equipment during a short construction phase
  • Controlling a temporary gate or entrance for contractors
  • Noting signs of trespass, dumping, or tampering
  • Securing the site at the end of each work day

Storm Aftermath, Labor Actions, and Special Events

  • Presence at properties with storm damage or lost power while repairs are arranged
  • Observing entrances and documenting activity during a labor dispute, without interfering with lawful activity
  • Added officers for a one-time event, sale, or opening
  • Coordinating with the client's managers, restoration crews, and public agencies on site

What to Tell Us So a Request Can Be Scoped Quickly

A short-notice request moves faster when the first call includes the basics. We need the property address and the type of building; the hours and dates you want covered, including your estimate of an end date; what happened and what the officer is there to prevent; how the officer gets in and where they can shelter, park, and use a restroom; the name and mobile number of a contact who will be reachable during the shift; and any known hazards such as broken glass, standing water, no power, or structural damage. If you need an armed officer, say so at the outset, because armed coverage is conditional on assignment requirements, licensing, insurance, staffing, and applicable Rhode Island law.

From that we write short post orders: the post location, the rounds, who is allowed in, and whom to call. They may be a single page on the first night and are expanded if the assignment runs longer. If a temporary post turns into a standing need, it is converted into a regular assignment with full post orders and a consistent officer schedule.

Short-Notice Coverage in Rhode Island: What Affects Availability

Rhode Island is small, but location still affects how quickly a temporary post can be staffed. The Providence metro area, including Warwick, Cranston, Pawtucket, and East Providence, is the easiest to reach. Rural towns in the northwest and southwest corners of the state, and the East Bay and Aquidneck Island communities reached by bridge, take longer and may depend on which officers are available at that hour. Summer weekend traffic to the shore adds time that no one can schedule around.

Weather drives a share of these requests. Nor'easters, coastal flooding, and tropical systems bring power outages, damaged storefronts, and failed alarm systems across many properties at once, and they also affect officers' ability to travel. In those periods demand is high and availability is limited; existing commitments are staffed first and new requests are taken as capacity allows.

Island assignments need advance planning. Coverage on Block Island depends on ferry schedules, transportation, and lodging where applicable, so an emergency request for New Shoreham cannot be treated like one on the mainland and same-day deployment should not be expected. Seasonal closings and winter vacancy along the coast are better handled as planned temporary coverage arranged before the need arises.

What the Program Includes

  • Straight answers on availability — We confirm what can be staffed and when, and we say so when a request cannot be met.
  • Defined duration — Assignments have a start, an expected end, and a simple way to extend or close them out.
  • Brief written post orders — Even a one-night post gets written instructions and a contact list.
  • Shift documentation — Shift reports record conditions and activity, which can be useful for owners and insurers.
  • Path to a regular post — Temporary coverage can convert to a standing assignment if the need continues.

Availability and limits. Emergency and temporary coverage is subject to officer availability, location, licensing, transportation where relevant, and assignment requirements. We do not guarantee response times or that any particular request can be staffed. Block Island and other assignments requiring travel need advance planning. Officers are private security personnel with no police powers; call 911 for any emergency in progress.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • We do not quote or guarantee response times. How soon a post can be staffed depends on officer availability, the location, licensing, transportation, and what the assignment requires; when you call 401-289-9900 we will tell you what is realistic for your situation.

  • Temporary security in Rhode Island ranges from a single overnight shift to several weeks. Any minimum shift length or other terms are explained when the request is scoped.

  • We cannot speak for your insurer or for any authority having jurisdiction. Ask them what they require; if an outage affects a fire alarm or sprinkler system, that is a fire watch question and the requirements are confirmed with the local fire official.

  • Island assignments are planned separately and ahead of time. Ferry schedules, transportation, and lodging where applicable affect staffing, so same-day coverage in New Shoreham should not be expected.

  • Tell us as early as you can. Extensions are common and are handled shift by shift or by resetting the end date, again subject to officer availability.
